Located in the vibrant Clement Street neighborhood of San Francisco, Ilana Coffee is a charming Vietnamese cafe that effortlessly marries authentic flavors with a welcoming, family-run atmosphere. If you’re on the hunt for a spot that serves up both soulful eats and refreshing beverages, this gem should be at the top of your list.
Ilana Coffee’s menu is a delightful journey through Vietnamese culinary staples with a few inspired twists. The star offering here is undoubtedly their Bánh Mì sandwiches, particularly the Steam Pork with Pate Banhmi and the Combination Bánh Mì, praised by regulars for their perfect balance of crispy baguette crust and generous fillings. Imagine sinking your teeth into a freshly baked baguette with a golden, crackly crust that gives way to tender Vietnamese steamed pork ham, creamy pate, zesty pickled vegetables, fragrant cilantro, and a subtle kick of jalapeños. This harmony of textures and flavors delivers a satisfying bite every time.
Breakfast lovers will appreciate the simple joy of an Egg, Cheese & Choice of Meat option, while those craving a sweet treat can indulge in freshly baked Chamocolate muffin or the delightfully smooth Bread Pudding and Lemon Bar. The cafe also offers a refreshing selection of blended drinks like Honeydew, Mango, Strawberry, and Green Tea, which provide a colorful and tasty accompaniment to any meal.
Beverage-wise, Ilana Coffee’s Vietnamese Iced Coffee is an absolute must-try. With its rich, bold coffee flavor softened with luscious condensed milk, it creates a perfect harmony that pairs beautifully with the savory sandwiches. Complimenting that is the Thai Iced Tea and Milk Tea, offering creamy, sweet alternatives with a chilled, refreshing edge, perfect for the sunny San Francisco days.
What truly sets Ilana Coffee apart is its friendly, down-to-earth vibe that feels both intimate and genuine. As echoed by frequent patron Thuy Ngan Le, the “friendly owners and staff” create a welcoming environment where you can relax and savor every bite without breaking the bank. The café’s relaxed, old-school charm invites locals and visitors alike to stop by for a quick breakfast or a casual lunch filled with memorable flavors.
While some visitors like Jonathan Dominguez found certain elements like the bread a touch heavier than expected, the overwhelming appreciation for the flavors and service shines through in reviews such as Stanley Ng’s, who praises the “crispiness” and balance in the combo bánh mì, and Eva Alvord’s enthusiasm for the diverse menu options that keep her coming back for more.
In short, Ilana Coffee isn’t just a cafe — it’s a culinary little haven that honors Vietnamese street food classics with care and consistency. Whether you’re savoring the rich layers of a traditional bánh mì or cooling down with a sweet Thai iced tea, this spot offers an authentic taste experience that’s both comforting and unforgettable.

We usually have breakfast at Ilana Coffee Friendly owners and staffs. Price is affordable for us. Vietnamese sandwich combination is must try here. We also order with Vietnamese coffee. Great mix.
First time here. Good combo bahn mi, crispy bread, right amount of pete, mayo. Will be back for sure.
I've been here a couple of times and it's soo good, I've had the Vietnamese iced coffee, iced Thai tea, and the BBQ pork Vietnamese sandwich. They were all great and I would definitely recommend them. There were also quite a few options for food and drinks, so I'm looking forward to going back and trying new things as everything has been good so far.
Ilana Coffee is my food pilgrimage to San Francisco. My ultimate combo? Steam Pork with Pate Banhmi ($6.95) and Vietnamese Iced Coffee ($4.95 for M, $6.75 for L)! Their Banhmi is generously filled with Vietnamese steamed pork ham, pate, pickled vegetables, cilantro, and jalapenos for the perfect filling-to-bread ratio. The choice of baguette is perfect as well because it has a thin, crispy crust and a pillowy soft crumb; it gives texture without cutting the roof of your mouth. If your spice tolerance is low, consider omitting the jalapenos or removing the seeds yourself. You should also add an Iced Coffee because what’s a meal without a drink? The medium size is sufficient for me, though I do get it with less ice. Rich, smooth, creamy, and sweet - it’s hard to beat. You’ll definitely be energized with that hit of caffeine and condensed milk! I’m so glad my sister stumbled upon Ilana Coffee because it’s easy to overlook this mom ‘n’ pop shop in the Richmond District. The design is fairly simple: there’s the kitchen area with display cases of pastries and snacks, as well as the seating area both inside and outside. Although I would love to gatekeep Ilana Cafe, the quality of their banhmi alone is worth travelling for.
Old school family ran spot. Bhan Mi was a little underwhelming, heavy bread. But was good, just expected more from a recommendation. Took 20-25 minutes. Had it in a nice small hike.
Lovely neighborhood cafe and sandwich shop. Stopped in this morning for a bagel with hummus and Viet coffee and am impressed with the service and fair pricing. I want to come back soon to try their banh mi subs. They have Wi-Fi and plugs which is nice and the seating is comfortable. Wish I had one of these next to my apartment in Tampa. Definitely support this small business if you can in sf!
There are so many reasons to like Ilana Coffee. - It opens early and its service was very friendly, efficient and fast. - It's Vietnamese sandwich is great. I had a combination sandwich, with has ham. pate and headchese. It’s a junior size but good for the price and perfect as a breakfast. - It has a lot more than Vietnamese sandwich. I also tried an egg, cheese and ham breakfast sandwich and for $4.25 it has excellent value.
2025 update: Ilana Coffee is my favorite coffee shop in the area. The people that work here are cool. The cafe feels local with good bagels, coffee, pastries and sandwiches. My favorite is their combo Vietnamese sandwich $8.25 w/extra meat pate +$1. Ilana Coffee is a great place to hang out on a lazy Sunday. Original review: Ilana Coffee have Vietnamese sandwiches. This is our early morning spot for coffee and a sandwich on the weekends. We usually ride our bicycles on the Great Highway and then through Golden Gate Park. It just so happens, this is the midway point before we head back. It is a good spot because they have chairs outside and we can park our bicycles on the sidewalk without having to lock them up. Service is friendly and quick.
